One of the most common specialty tests we recommend at our naturopathic doctor office in the Phoenix area is food sensitivity panel testing. This test looks at 240 foods to help determine whether foods may be contributing to symptoms like headaches, fatigue, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, skin issues, and chronic inflammation.
Food Allergy vs Food Sensitivity: What’s the Difference?
There is an important difference between a true food allergy and a food sensitivity.
Food allergies involve IgE antibodies. These are the reactions many people think of right away—swelling of the throat, hives, itching, large welts, or severe reactions to foods like shellfish, nuts, or other allergens. These reactions can happen quickly and can be serious.
Food sensitivities are different. These often involve IgG antibodies, which means the body is sensing something it does not like, but it may not create an immediate severe reaction. Instead, it may show up as:
- headaches
- fatigue
- bloating
- diarrhea
- constipation
- skin irritation
- brain fog
- inflammation
These symptoms can be much harder to connect to food on your own.
Why We Use Food Sensitivity Testing for Gut Health
One major reason we use food sensitivity testing in our Phoenix naturopathic clinic is to help identify possible leaky gut or intestinal permeability.
If only one or two foods show up on your report, it may simply mean your body does not tolerate those foods well.
But if 20, 30, or 40 foods are highly reactive, the foods themselves may not be the true problem. Often, that is a sign the gut lining is compromised, allowing larger food particles into the bloodstream. When this happens, the immune system responds and creates antibodies against those particles.
That gives us an important clue: the issue may be your gut—not all those foods.
How the Test Works
The food sensitivity panel can be completed in two ways:
- Blood draw – This is often the easiest and most efficient option and can sometimes be added to standard lab work.
- Finger prick test – A good option for children or patients who do not want a blood draw.
